While BRD's equipment file for the BoW project was left in a nearly completed state its World Map remained at a much earlier development phase.
Testament to the huge amount of dedication these big maps require. I use the word "dedication" to summarize the various elements that go into it.
As it was left the map displays a series of fortification hex lines that act as much welcome country border lines and, generally, are very close to what we can see in a regular map. Apart from this, the only features marked are a small number of city hexes.

Some years ago I took on the BoW map intent on filling it a bit more.
I had hundreds of objectives added, maybe even beyond thousand, when an incident took it all to map´s heaven.
Truth be said, I had stopped for reflexion after getting the distinct impression I was marking too many objectives.
What remains of that are a couple of screenshots:

Yet again years after that I picked it up and used a different approach, sort of "by layers".
A phase 1: just adding all the missing capitals and assess result.
A phase 2: adding cities above a certain amount of population (modern figures used as base; not the best I know) and assess result.
Actually I don't recall exactly anymore but I believe it was 100 thousand population.
An eventual phase 3: adding more cities below phase 2 limit if there seems to be room for them.
In essence, I did it up to completion of phase two, resulting in a less populated map when compared with the lost edition.
But with more room for other features and I believe adding more cities would hinder those other features representation.

Last time I picked it up, in recent weeks, I added 3 rivers; Tejo aka Tagus being the longest of:

The visual elements some may find strange relate with the use of a customized tile map, incorporating stuff taken or adapted from PacGen tiles.
All cities, airfields and ports added by me were named. As far as I could I adopted local names, including local words for "port" and "airfield".
In example, if you read "minato" you are looking at a Japanese port.
